Description
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of both San Francisco and the United States. It was declared one of the wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Frommers called it "Possibly one of the most beautiful, or certainly the most photographed, bridges in the world." It was begun on January 5, 1933, completed April 19, 1937, and opened May 27, 1937. It is made of steel, the design is suspension with truss arches, almost 9,000 feet long, 90 feet wide, 746 feet tall, and daily carries about 110,000 vehicles. The architects and designers were Joseph Straus, Irving Morrow, and Charles Ellis. Information from Wikipedia.
