Artist's Description
On a bus tour of Houston, Texas, whiling away time before a flight, we had the opportunity to visit the NASA Rocket Park. This genuine Saturn V is not a mock-up; it is a real launch vehicle which could have been in rotation to carry a payload, but which did not occur, due to budget cuts. The strength and power emanates from its incredible technology and design.
The Saturn V Rockets were in use from 1967-1973. They launched the 45-ton Apollo spacecrafts and the 120-ton Skylab into Earth orbit and on lunar missions. Thirteen were launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida--24 astronauts; three more than once, during the years of 12/1968-12/1972.
A huge hangar, built over the rocket in 2005, protects the rocket from further weathering. Giant tires provided a way for it to be rolled into place.
(Info from Wikipedia, plaques in the hangar, and personal observation.)
