Description
Swedish cottages, barns, and homes are very often painted in a bright crimson red, which is known as Falu Red, or Falun Red. This distinctive color is made from water, rye flour, linseed oil, and tailings from copper mines.
The name is from the area of Falun, in the province of Dalarna. The paint has been around for centuries and helps to protect wood.
A visitor to Sweden might think the color was required because it is used so much! But other countries use it too, especially for barns and farm buildings.
I painted this picture, using watercolor pencils. I have tried to capture both the color as well as buildings on farms I have seen while traveling in Scandinavia.
