Description
The Main-Danube (Donau) Canal, in Germany, is an engineering miracle and the result of dreams of planners for centuries, going back as far as 793 when Emperor Charlemagne order a canal built in a small section of this area. (Thanks to Wikipedia for much of this information.) This canal, after decades of planning, was finished in 1992 and updated about 2007. The convenience of having a direct path between the Main and the Danube rivers, for both pleasure and commerce, is very important for the movement of goods throughout Europe.
Passenger cruise lines take advantage of the beauty along the rivers and many people are interested in going through locks!
This lock, Hilpoltstein, is the highest point of the canal, at 1,332 feet above sea level. It is the highest point on earth that can be reached by watercraft from the ocean.
While one wishes for sunshine, rainy days can provide calming backgrounds for viewing this amazing lock!
