Haleakala is a 10,000 ft. mountain on the island of Maui, in Hawaii. It is one of the two volcanic mountains that make up the island, joined by an isthmus which was, a million years ago, under water. Hawaii is the farthest landmass from any other land and thus has extremely clear skies at the top. Great astronomical sightings and research take place from the observatory. It is located in a National Park and thus taken care of very well. A great image for those who love Hawaii and the science of astronomy!
