Description
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is America's largest national park and received this status in 1980. The terrain rises from the ocean all the way to 18,008 foot Mount St. Elias. The park is 13.2 million acres, which is the same size as Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks plus Switzerland, combined! These mountain ranges contain some of the largest volcanoes in North America. In 1979 it was designated as a World Heritage Site.
The region is home to a diversity of animals as the climate ranges from temperate rainforest to tundra. The park is designated to protect the wildlife and their habitat. The park has a wide range of wilderness-based recreational opportunities.
