Description
The Shrine of Remembrance is dedicated to the men and women of Australia who served in its wars. It was dedicated on Remembrance Day, November 11, at 11 am, 1934. It is one of the largest such memorials in Australia. About one third of the population of Melbourne, one million at the time, came to the dedication. The Stone of Remembrance, of marble, is inscribed with the Bible Verse (John 15:13) "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." A 11am, on November 11, the sun shines through the skylight, landing on the word Love. It is a powerful and sacred memorial, and the gardens surrounding it are significant. New building provides more displays and information for viewers.
