Description
This kiawe tree, on the beach at Mile 14, in Maui, Hawaii, has been fascinating photographers for a long time. (It is shown in the morning at low tide.) The manner in which the trunk and branches stretch out into the ocean is unusual, as its root system can stand salty water, due to the long tap root that goes deep into the earth. As a person drives from the airport to Lahaina, this tree is very visible, in the narrow space between the ocean and the highway. Mile 14 is a favorite beach area, as it is protected by a coral reef and is quite safe for swimming.
Unfortunately, the salty water has taken it's toll. The tree was in trouble when I took the photo but it is not alive any more. People do still climb out on it's branches!
