Description
Snowflakes, freshly fallen, contain a great deal of trapped air and thus, white light is reflected back to our eyes. When it settles, snowflakes change from their beautiful star-like crystals to rounded grains of ice. Piled up, the weight of all these grains presses them together, which reduces the air between grains.
Eventually, these compacted grains of ice will form a solid mass. Light is bent, or refracted, inside the solid ice and only the blue spectrum is transmitted to our eyes!
The miracle occurs--color changing from white to blue!
This mass of ice was taken from the Mendenhall Glacier in Anchorage, Alaska and brought to the Visitor's Center at the park area, allowing visitors to obtain a greater knowledge of glaciers. Thanks to the staff of the Visitor's Center who prepared the exhibits and provided this information.
