Description
Hubbard Glacier in Alaska is called a tidewater glacier, as it ends in open water. It is also also a mountain glacier, as it extends 76 miles back into the mountains. The terminus (front) of the glacier is 600 feet tall, though only 350 feet above water. It has been advancing for 100 years. It is so long that it takes 400 years for ice to traverse its length; thus, the ice shown in this picture is 400 years old! (wikipedia) The small icebergs seen in the bay are only 20% of their mass. It was cold and rainy on the day this picture was taken. Gardiner Hubbard was the first president of the National Geographic Society, his name being the name of this magnificent glacier.
