Description
This closeup view of one of the locks of the Panama Canal (finished in 1914) shows how the locomotives, also called "mules," have to go up/down hill as they pull the ships. The two-ton locomotives run on railroad-type tracks but with a cog system in the middle. The cogs prevent the ships from pulling the trains off the tracks. The operations go 24 hours a day, after the addition of many powerful lights. Large ships have just a few inches of clearance on either side; thus the importance of keeping them going straight!
