Description
Mendenhall Glacier is only 12 miles from Juneau, AK, making it an easily accessible place to visit. A beautiful Visitor's Center has been built near by with great information about glaciers, as well as providing wide vistas for viewing. People love to hike the many trails, but, they need to look out for Grizzlies! It is in the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rain forest in the world. The glacier is fed by the Juneau Icefield, and enters Mendenhall Lake (seen in the foreground) which feeds the Mendenhall River. All that "dirt" is actually crushed rock--formed by those powerful forces of the ice moving over land.
