Description
This spectacular status of Christ the Redeemer, located 2,300 ft (700m) above Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Corcovado Mountain, can be seen by everyone in Rio, unless it is clouded over. The statue faces east, and thus, in the Southern Hemisphere, the noonday sun is on His left arm. The rays of the sun seem to be shining right over His shoulder in this picture.
He was created by French sculptor Paul Landowski, designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, and constructed by local engineers and craftspeople. It is built of reinforced concrete and covered with soapstone. (Wikipedia)
It has survived several lightening strikes and other problems and needs constant maintenance. It is lit at night with huge packs of brilliant light. The statue is 98 feet tall (30m), stands on a 26 foot (8m) pedestal of granite, and His arms extend 92 feet (29m0.
A large platform allows many to view this beautiful statue.
